Long Time No Post

It's been a long time since I posted... I have to say I'm still a little leary of the whole blog thing. Not too sure that I like the fact that just anyone can "evesdrop" on our life without me knowing. I like the idea, but not the seeming lack of security. Like on my second blog someone responded to it that I didn't know and they didn't tell me who they were... kinda freaky... b/c they knew me and where I grew up... Who are you Cajun Girl?? I'm still deciding if blogging is for me.... anyone know of a way to make it more secure and "by invitation only"??

One thing I'm not deciding on anymore is how we are going to educate our daughter. We are choosing to homeschool her. We are excited about the possibilities and freedom we have to customize an education program that fits her and allows her to excell where she is strong- at her own pace. But the thing I am most happy about is the lack of hurriedness that I think homeschooling will provide for our family. When I sat down to think it through I was shocked.

In a traditional school setting a child's day looks something like this:

morning routine/breakfast/etc. 1 hour
on the bus at on the bus 30 min.- 1 hour
school from 8am-2pm (6 hours)
on the bus 30 min.- 1 hour
homework for 1-4 hours (that's an average I read about recently)
practices/activities/sports (let's say just one hour plus drive time)
bedtime routine/shower/etc. 1 hour
sleep time 10-12 hours

I'm not a math whiz, but even taking only an hour for homework and sleeping 10 hours... that's still 21 hours a day that revolve around sleeping and schooling type stuff.

That leaves a mere 3 hours a day for our families to be together doing anything that we enjoy, including having dinner together. That's not much. When I realized this fact, I became more joyful about our choice to homeschool because my prayer is that it leads to a less hurried family.

I want my children to enjoy their lives and for our family to have time together to create memories and traditions. For me less hurried sounds great and I am looking forward to it.
